The Fabulous Fakes at Harvard

More than 100 visitors attended the opening of Fabulous Fakes & Poignant Poetry, an exhibit of art and poetry created by fifth-grade students at Samuel Brown School in Peabody, Mass. The opening was held April 7, 2002 at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum.

The two-hour reception marked the third time Harvard has played host to the Fabulous Fakes. In addition to the work done by students, the 2002 opening also featured Fabulous Fakes created by 20 members of the Brown School's faculty as well as by two high school students.

"No opening has been as rewarding as this year's," said Deb Whitmore, Brown School art teacher and creator of the Fabulous Fakes integrated unit. "The gallery was packed with students and parents who traveled many miles on a Sunday. It was easy to see, from the smiles on their faces, that the Fabulous Fakes wasn't just another school project."

The 75 pieces of artwork and poetry were hung in the third floor gallery of the Fogg. Parents, teachers, invited guests and, of course, Brown School students admired this year's accomplishments, and visited other parts of the museum hoping to catch a glimpse of the original artwork that inspired them.

As the three-week exhibit continued, many additional visitors appreciated this year's Fabulous Fakes. The guest book contained kudos from far and wide, including this one from Bavaria's Alfred Minch:. "Danke für die vielen schönen biespiele der interpretation!"

The Fabulous Fakes Return to Jamaica Plain

Those who didn't get to see this year's Fabulous Fakes exhibit at the Harvard University Art Museums got a second chance this summer.

The same faculty Fabulous Fakes shown in April at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum were on display at The Art Gallery at Spring House in Jamaica Plain, Mass. during the month of August, 2002.

This marked a return engagement at Spring House where last year's Fabulous Fakes were a big hit. This year the guest speaker was Melissa Brown, First Grade Teacher at the Brown School who discussed her Fake and the whole Fabulous Fakes experience.
